DA says sheriff will resign a second time after racist recordings

Columbus County Sheriff Jody Greene resigned from his position Wednesday, the second time he's resigned since recordings of Greene making racist statements about his employees became public.

At 11:30 a.m., District Attorney Jon David held a press conference regarding a petition for the removal and permanent disqualification of Greene. David also referenced a parallel criminal probe related to Greene that he could not discuss.

WECT reports the original petition brought forward allegations against Greene including misconduct while in office, a sexual affair with a deputy and other accusations.

Greene resigned during the hearing in October but was reelected just weeks later. He was sworn in for a second term on Dec. 29.

David filed the most recent petition in the minutes after Greene was sworn in. The new petition has two sections, to remove Greene as sheriff and permanently disqualify him from holding the job in the future.

The permanent disqualification section will be ruled on at a later date.

County commissioners will select a replacement for Greene. Until then, the chief deputy will serve as acting sheriff.
