Cold temps coming as front moves through Triangle

A cold front will advance through the Triangle starting early Thursday, delivering cooler air into the weekend.

Temperatures will reach into the lower-mid 70s Thursday afternoon but will nosedive into the mid-40s by nightfall.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said there is also a possibility of isolated showers on Thursday.

“We’ll be above normal for the afternoon highs. Our temperatures are often warmer out ahead of a cold front,” Gardner said. “Expect a nice warm day ahead of our cooler temperatures.”

Friday will bring mostly sunny and cooler weather with highs in the mid-to-upper 60s. Temperatures will dip into the upper-30s by the start of the weekend.

Temperatures on Saturday will be the lowest of the weekend with highs in the mid-50s, but there will be plenty of sunshine throughout the day. The overnight hours will see temperatures near freezing on Saturday and into Sunday morning.

The forecast calls for a 33 degree low on Saturday. The normal temperature is 41 degrees and the record low—set in 1961—was 21 degrees.

“[On] Sunday morning we have the potential for some freezing conditions,” Gardner said.

By mid-afternoon, temperatures will reach the upper 50s on Sunday and continue to trend toward warmer weather heading into the beginning of next week.
