The co-worker of a Chapel Hill food delivery driver shot and robbed while on the job is leading a community effort to help him.

Robert Perry, a driver for Insomnia Cookies in Chapel Hill, is still hospitalized after someone stole his car and shot him four times during his final delivery of the night on Dec. 11.

No arrests have been announced, but police did find the stolen car.

"It's just a random act of violence," said Susan Coe, Perry's co-worker. "I think he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The shooting occurred on Umstead Drive near Estes Drive in the early morning hours of Dec. 11.

Coe said doctors have told Perry he may be paralyzed from the waist down but that he is determined to survive.

"I have spoken to him, and he is in great spirits," Coe said. "He says that he’s going to overcome whatever news they give him, he’s going to overcome it. He says he’s going to come out of this on top."

Coe said Insomnia Cookies is going to pay Perry’s medical bills. She started a GoFundMe page to help pay the future bills he will face in his long road to recovery.

So far, more than $22,000 has been raised.

"I never expected for it to go up as high as it is," Coe said. "But I don’t underestimate Chapel Hill, and [the donations] have actually gone a lot further than just Chapel Hill."

The generosity prompted Perry’s dad to write a message he asked Coe to share, which reads, "The expressions of love and support for Rob are overwhelming, and they are helping him every day."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760 or Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.
