Charges filed more than two months after Cary baby's death

A Cary woman arrested Sunday in the March death of her 4-month-old son was ordered Monday to remain in jail under a $500,000 bond.

Shenequa Lashan Walker, 33, of 14301 Praxis Way, is charged with child abuse, willful act or omission causing serious bodily injury and involuntary manslaughter.

Walker’s son was found unresponsive on March 3 inside the family's home after she contacted emergency dispatchers, according to a 911 recording. She told the dispatcher that she awoke to find her son wasn't breathing and had blood coming from his nose.

The dispatcher directed her to perform CPR. Paramedics arrived about seven minutes later. but the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cary police haven't released the boy's name or details about how he died.

Walker has four other children, and a public defender said Monday that they have been in foster care since the baby's death.

Walker posted a photograph of her children on Facebook on Feb. 13, referring to them as "my crew." A little more than month after the baby died, she posted a photo of him online with the caption "greatly missed."

Neighbors used to seeing Walker around the apartment complex in northwest Cary where she lived with her children said they were very surprised by her arrest.

"The kid didn't even get old enough to know anything. It's really sad," Cody Dobert said.
