When to stop: A reminder on school bus laws

A child was hit getting off a school bus in Edgecombe County on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The child was hit near U.S. Highway 64 Alternate and Dunbar Road in Tarboro while getting off a school bus that had left North East Carolina Prep School.

Police said the child was not seriously injured from being hit and was released to a parent at the scene.

No charges have been filed pending the outcome of the investigation.

Tarboro police asked drivers to use caution when approaching a stopped school bus.

When a four-lane road does not have any kind of median, drivers in both directions must stop when a school bus is stopped.

If that four lane road has something in the middle - whether it's a center turn lane or any kind of median - only drivers behind and beside the school bus must stop.
