A child was in critical condition Saturday after Raleigh police said he was hit by a vehicle.

Joann Norwood, who police say is 9-year-old Richard Doyle's grandmother, was trying to back out of the garage at 5221 Kaplan Drive when the vehicle struck the boy. According to police, the woman did not see the child behind the car.

Neighbors say that Norwood would never do anything to intentionally harm anyone. Neighbor, Brad Vanderlip describes Norwood as "a real nice person."

Officers said the boy was taken to WakeMed, where he was listed in critical condition.

"It is just a freak accident. I ask the community and the people around us to pray for her, pray for her, the family, and that little boy," Vanderlip said.
