Raleigh police chief discusses decision to retire

Raleigh's police chief, Cassandra Deck-Brown, is officially stepping down on June 30, the city announced Tuesday.

Raleigh leaders hope to have a new chief in place by July 1.

When she made the resignation announcement at the end of 2020, Deck-Brown said it’s time for her to move on and pass the torch to the next generation of leadership.

Raleigh is currently conducting a nationwide search for her replacement.

Deck-Brown has served as chief since February 2013.

In December, when she announced her retirement, Deck-Brown said she was very proud of how her officers handled 2020, adding she hopes her legacy will be that she improved community engagement, including faith leaders, social workers and mental health experts, and officer training, among other things.

"To see the evolution growth and change, I’m honored to have been in the seat and been able to steer the ship," she said. "Sometimes there have been very rough waters, but I didn’t run then, and I’m not running now."
