Chase ends in fiery crash along I-540; driver likely faces felony charge

The crash happened near the Buffaloe Road exit on I-540 around 11 p.m. Wednesday. A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper said the chase started when he clocked the driver going 95 mph.

A driver who led state troopers on a high-speed chase in Raleigh that ended with a fiery crash on I-540 is facing several charges including felony of fleeing to elude arrest

The crash happened near the Buffaloe Road exit around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The driver Jonathan Bazare Hinnant has been charged of the following:

  • Flee/elude arrest with motor vehicle
  • Speeding
  • Reckless driving
  • No operators license
  • Expired registration card/tag
  • Drive after consuming
  • Fail maintain lane control
  • Expired/no inspection

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker was on the scene shortly after it happened. The trooper said the chase started when he clocked the driver going 95 mph.

The speeding car went off the side of I-540 and into trees.

Hinnant was taken to the hospital but was not badly hurt.
