Celebrate MLK Day with service, celebrations

Make it a day on, not a day off.

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which means kids have the day off from school.

It's easy to treat it as just an extension of the weekend, but I wanted to encourage readers to get involved in any number of service projects and celebrations in the community.

I shared five ways for families to mark the day last week. NaShonda Cooke wrote about her own childhood experiences celebrating the day (King gave Cooke's mom a doughnut!) and shared details about a big event in Durham on Monday.

We also list five movies for families that honor King's legacy, including "Hidden Figures," pictured above, which I highly recommend.
