Cary road reopened after car accident

A portion of Kildaire Farm Road near Penny Road was briefly shut down Tuesday night after a car whose driver was trying to avoid parked police cars wound up crashing into them instead, Cary police said.

Just before 7:30 p.m., two police cars were parked in the far-right lane on the southbound side of Kildaire Farm Road in front of St. Francis United Methodist Church, Cary Police Capt. Michael Williams said. Officers had responded to a call of a woman lying in the middle of the road. There was no word on why the woman was lying in the road.

A car traveling northbound entered the turning lane in order to enter a shopping center. A sports utility vehicle traveling south drifted into the center lane to give police room, and it hit the northbound vehicle head-on, Williams said.

As a result, the SUV flipped and hit both police cars. The officers were standing on the sidewalk and were unhurt.

Two people, including a small child, in the northbound vehicle were transported to a hospital, but no information about their conditions was available.

One person in the SUV was also transported to a hospital with unknown injuries.

The accident remains under investigation, Williams said.
