Halifax deputies hurt after high-speed chase

A carjacking that started in Summerville, S.C., ended Wednesday night in Halifax County with three men injured – the alleged carjacker and two deputies.

Capt. Scott Hall, spokesman for the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, said the two law enforcement officers – Deputy C. Roberts and Sgt. C. Sherrod – were treated and released for injuries.

Quintin Lonnell Williams, 32, of Charleston, S.C., was in critical condition at ECU Hospital in Greenville after his role in the two-state high-speed chase.

Hall said Williams first stole a 2023 Chevrolet Traverse in Summerville from a woman. He drove that car to a business off of exit 141 of Interstate 95 in Nash County, where he swapped the Chevy for a Dodge truck and continued northbound on I-95.

Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said, "We got a call right after 5 o’clock of a possible assault and a carjacking at the New Dixie Mart in Dortches."

Stone said Williams approached a man as he pumped gas.

"He just traded cars, committed assault to get that vehicle, and then ended up in a car chase and put everybody at risk."

Halifax County deputies were also notified about the second carjacking and joined the search for Williams in the Dodge.

They spotted the stolen vehicle on I-95 and attempted to pull it over, but Williams did not stop.

Hall said Halifax deputies followed the office's chase policy.

"In this situation, we knew that a violent assault had taken place, and we knew that we needed to do – we needed to apprehend him," Hall said.

Williams was able to reach U.S. Highway 158 in Weldon, where he crashed into two marked Halifax County patrol cars.

Investigators said they plan to push for charges connected to the alleged assault, car thefts and evading arrest once he has recovered.
