Car crushed on Hillsborough Street, 1,000 lose power

Hundreds were without power Monday after a tree took down a power pole on Hillsborough Street near North Carolina State University.

Before 9 a.m., about 1,000 homes and businesses in the area of Hillsborough Street and Clark Avenue lost power after strong winds toppled a pecan tree.

At 2 p.m. on Monday, only 169 customers were without power, according to Duke Energy. The power was estimated to be restored by 9 p.m.

The tree took down three electrical poles and lines and crushed at least one car.

The Alexander Family YMCA temporarily closed due to the outages but has since reopened.

The area is home to dozens of N.C. State students who woke up Monday to find they had no power.

"It was crazy, said Kaitlin Booth. "I had to go take an exam at 7:50 [and] I was walking across the street ... there was no blockage or anything ... and I come back [and] a tree is in the road, police are putting cones up everywhere. I don't know what happened."

Hillsborough Street is currently closed at Hillcrest Road and at Ashe Avenue. Drivers should take an alternate route to avoid traffic.
