Bystanders save Raleigh man from burning truck off I-95

Two men were seriously burned after a fire broke out inside a truck’s cab off of Interstate 95 in Dunn on Wednesday morning.

The fire started at 3:15 a.m. while the truck was parked at Pilot Travel Plaza.

Jared Giles said he was pumping gas when the fire started. At one point, he said the flames were shooting 5 feet in the air.

Lee Williams, a maintenance employee at the plaza, saw smoke billowing from the truck while he was making rounds. By the time he got to the truck, Scottie Middleton, 40, of South Carolina, had escaped through the passenger side.

Myron Farrar, 60, of Raleigh, was trapped in the truck’s sleeping area.

Williams and Giles both grabbed fire extinguishers. They were able to knock down enough of the flames to pull Farrar out.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office said Middleton and Farrar were taken to Betsey Johnson Hospital. Farrar was then airlifted to the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.

Their conditions were not known.

The sheriff's office said both men work for V3 Transportation out of Ohio.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. No foul play is suspected.
