Firm adding 400 call center jobs in Buncombe

A company that supports technology and gaming firms plans to expand its Buncombe County call center, adding 408 jobs, officials said Monday.

Arvato Digital Services will invest $1.8 million in the Weaverville operation during the next three years. The average annual wage for the new jobs will be $26,143, plus benefits, which is lower than Buncombe County's average of $32,968.

"Historically, our company has successfully adapted its capabilities to meet the evolving needs of our clients. The call center initiative is an excellent example of our ability to react to the business environment and ensure our resources are appropriately placed,” Bob Fletcher, Arvato's executive vice president for North American customer service, said in a statement.

Arvato, a division of Germany-based Bertelsmann AG, already employs 575 people in Weaverville. The company provides services to firms in the IT, technology, gaming, video and audio industries.

The company qualified for a $200,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund, which provides financial assistance to attract business projects to the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job and investment targets to obtain the funds.
