Roxboro plant lays off 120

The Georgia-Pacific plant in Roxboro will slow operations by the end of November, a spokeswoman said Thursday, laying off 120 employees.

Julie Davis said the slumping housing market has reduced need for the building products manufactured there, making those 120 positions unnecessary. She emphasized that the slowdown does not imply the closure of the plant.

Georgia-Pacific will retain 40 employees at the Roxboro facility and will recall those laid off when the housing market rebounds, she said. Davis could not predict when that rebound and recall might take place, however.
