A Franklin County landmark is no more.

Crews on Thursday finished tearing down the Murphy House restaurant in Louisburg, a local staple for nearly 60 years. The slow economy forced the owners to close the restaurant last year.

"We were a part of Franklin County as it grew, and Franklin County was a part of us," co-owner John Sledge said. "It's a sad day for us – a sad day for a lot of stuff – but what happens is, you hope out of this comes something good."

Sledge said Murphy House will continue to provide catering services from a separate location.

A Sheetz gas station will take over the Murphy House site on U.S. Highway 401.
