Warrant: Student admitted to knife at school, says it wasn't used in stabbing

Bullying may have contributed to a September stabbing at Northern High School in Durham, documents show.

The stabbing occurred around 11 a.m. on Sept. 11, just days into the new school year, sending the school into a lockdown.

New details outlined in a three-page search warrant for a student's cellphone indicate bullying may have been an underlying factor.

According to the search warrant, the student told investigators he brought a knife to campus after being bullied by another student, who was stabbed.

New documents indicate a student came into the school's guidance office bleeding from his abdomen and asking for help. He was hospitalized with possible injuries to his liver.

Detectives said security footage showed the victim going into a bathroom with a group of kids before another student in a black hoodie followed him inside.

Next the video shows a huge crowd of students flooding into the locker room, and the stabbing victim exits the locker room in visible pain.

Later, the student in the black hoodie emerges.

Detectives said they seized a small pocketknife from the student.

Warrants indicate the student with the knife claimed students had jumped him repeatedly in the previous weeks, saying they were threatening to harm him again.

The student with the knife told detectives there was an incident in the bathroom but he said he did not use the knife. He claimed it fell out of his pocket and, when the other students saw it, they ran away.

A juvenile petition was filed for possession of a weapon on school grounds and assault with a deadly weapon, but because it is a juvenile charge, it doesn't name the person it's filed against.
