An 8-year-old girl was shot inside an upstairs bedroom Thursday night, according to the Durham Police Department.

The girl was shot Thursday night around 8 p.m. in a duplex in the 800 block of Liberty Street in Durham.

Family members who did not want to appear on camera said the girl was upstairs when the bullet came through her window.

According to emergency radio traffic, the girl was hit in the neck.

WRAL News crews at the scene saw a bullet in the upstairs window and at least two bullet holes in cars parked outside the home.

According to police, the girl was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. She is in stable condition.

The 8-year-old girl is the first child shot in Durham this year, according to police. Thirty-five people under the age of 17 were shot in Durham last year.

Seven minutes before police responded to the Liberty Street shooting, a man was shot in the leg near a shopping center the 900 block of Fayetteville Street, around 8 p.m.

The man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The scenes are only 1 mile apart, but it is unknown at this time whether the two shootings are related.

Earlier on Friday, the Durham County Sheriff's Office responded to a crash near RTP and found two more people with gunshot wounds.

No arrests have been announced in any of the shootings.
