Breugger's Bagels is teaming up with Durham Public Schools in a project aimed at ensuring kids read over the summer.

Until May 1, bring in a new or gently used book to two Bruegger's Bagel locations in Durham and get a free bagel with cream cheese. The promotion is being offered at the Bruegger's on Ninth Street and Commons at University Place.

Durham's BookMark project is designed to give new or gently used books to elementary students throughout Durham Public Schools. Studies show that kids lose up to three months of what they learned the previous year over the summer and reading levels decrease up to 25 percent. Research also shows that the so-called summer slide can be avoided by having children read four books over the summer. The books would go to kids who may not have books at home or easy access to a library.

The Regulator Bookshop on Ninth Street also is offering a 20 percent discount on all BookMark purchases.
