For the first time, the N.C. State Fair will feature a beer competition.

The North Carolina Brewers' Cup will feature categories for home and professional brewers.

Professional and amateur brewers can submit their beers to the North Carolina Brewers Cup by Sept. 7. Eight to 12 professional beer judges will decide who wins in each category.

Find out how to enter.

Home brewer winners will receive $10 for first place, $7 for second and $5 for third.

Wineries and wine makers have competed at the State Fair for several years. You cannot buy or sell alcohol at the fair, but the winners in the wine and beer categories will be on display.

The N.C. State Fair runs Oct. 11-21. The theme this year is Bumper Crop of Fun.

There will be a launch party for the NC Brewers' Cup on June 16 from noon to 4 p.m. at The Standard in Chapel Hill. Expect a panel on craft beer and tasting selections from Bull City Burger, Foothills, Mystery Brewery and Olde Hickory.

Tickets are $15 and buy early because space is limited.
