Brett Morton resigns as West Stanly football coach

Morton said that the decision was his own and that it was time for him to do something different.

West Stanly High School's head football coach Brett Morton has resigned, he confirmed with HighSchoolOT.

The Colts posted the job this afternoon and Morton confirmed shortly after. Morton says that it was his decision and it was time for him to do something different.

Morton's team finished with a 5-6 overall record in 2023. The Colts made the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 2A state playoffs, but fell to Randleman in the first round in a 43-0 shutout.

West Stanly plays in the Rocky River 2A/3A Conference with Anson, Forest Hills, Monroe, Parkwood, and Piedmont.

Morton became the head coach at West Stanly ahead of the 2017 season. His first year leading the team saw a 3-8 overall record. Then, West Stanly finished with a winning record in each of the next three seasons. His West Stanly teams posted a combined overall record of 32-36. His teams made the playoffs three times.

He coached current NC State standout Jordan Poole while Poole attended West Stanly.
