Boxer in wheelchair seeks home

An animal rescue group is trying to find a home for a 2-year-old boxer forced to walk in a doggy wheelchair due to a neurological disorder.

Violet was left at a veterinarian's office after she was struck by a vehicle in May 2008. Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue took over Violet's care.

Violet underwent surgery and beat back a rare form of cancer. Then, she was diagnosed a rare neurological disorder that impairs her ability to walk on her own. The vet gave her a 50-50 chance of moving on her own again.

But Violet survived surgery again and flourished in physical therapy. A car dealership donated a special set of wheels to make into a wheelchair for her rear legs.

"She gets along great with the wheels, and she's absolutely adorable," her foster mother, Kristin Lee, wrote in an email to WRAL.

At her foster home, Violet runs, chases and plays with three other dogs in the back yard.

"I know your probably thinking, 'Oh how sad,'" reads Violet's adoption profile. "Well, to that I say, 'Don’t even think it,' 'cause I LOVE my wheel chair. It helps me be an independent girl."

Violet has finished her medical treatment and become comfortable enough using her wheelchair that she is now ready to be adopted.

Lee said the boxer doesn't need any regular medication, just a home where she can get around. She's good with both cats and dogs.

"I know that the perfect family is out there somewhere," Lee said.
