Body of missing fisherman found near Rocky Mount Reservoir

Search crews began looking for Larry Drake on Wednesday afternoon after a boat that was registered to him was found abandoned near a small island.

Crews find body of missing fisherman in Rocky Mount

A missing fisherman was found dead near the Rocky Mount Reservoir on Thursday afternoon.

At 5 p.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to the Rocky Mount Reservoir to investigate an unoccupied boat that was anchored near a small island. The boat was registered to Larry Drake, 70, of Rocky Mount.

According to his family, Drake left his home at 10 a.m. on Wednesday to go fishing at the reservoir. Drake had not been heard from since he left for his fishing trip.

Multiple agencies searched the island and the water surrounding the boat for multiple hours.

The search ended Wednesday night and resumed the next morning.

At 2:25 p.m. on Thursday, the Rocky Mount Fire Department Dive Team located the body of Drake in the water. Drake was retrieved from the water and pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time," Rocky Mount Police said in a release statement.

Police don't suspect foul play.

The agencies that aided in the search included the Rocky Mount Police Department, Rocky Mount Fire Department, Nash County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Tar River Dive Team, Coopers Volunteer Fire Department, West Mount Volunteer Fire Department and Nash County Cadaver Dog Team.
