Bill Leslie: True Comfort Food

At Amedeo's, Cindy still orders the same thing she ordered in 1972 -- spaghetti with side salad and Italian dressing. My order was pretty much the same as well -- ziti, sauce and meatballs. This is true comfort food.

We sat down for dinner and the young waitress asked a familiar question: “Have you dined here before?”

“Why, yes,” I said. “Cindy and I had our first date here 47 years ago this month. We have dined at Amedeo's Italian Restaurant many times, including the night before our daughter Lauren was born.”

That was quite a conversation starter.

“Wow! That’s pretty impressive,” said the waitress before taking our order.

We sat in a booth just like we did on our first date. Right across from our dining spot was the Tom Suiter booth in honor of the retired WRAL Sports legend. We felt right at home.

Great restaurants come and go, but Amedeo’s has stayed the course. Its menu has expanded, but the basic Italian recipes are just like they were in 1963 when former NC State football star Dick DeAngelis opened the restaurant.

It’s good to be an NC State fan when you come here, but it’s not required! Cindy and I are both Carolina grads and we have always been treated warmly at Amedeo’s. And the food is always terrific!
