Best burgers in the Triangle

Every so often I crave a great cheeseburger. My new favorite go-to place is in Chapel Hill.

You’ve probably heard of Al’s Burger Shack by now. TripAdvisor ranked Al’s “Bobo Chili Cheeseburger,” topped with chili sauce, coleslaw, onion, yellow mustard and American cheese, as the best burger in America.

I’ve done my research. I’ve taste tested the Bobo twice since retirement and each time with sweet potato fries.

A wave of nostalgia hit me with the first bite. I was reminded of a spectacular chili burger my father used to grill in our backyard in Morganton. The Bobo also triggered memories of the scrumptious Carolina Burger with chili and slaw at Scotty’s of North Hills back in the 1970s.

I was fortunate enough to be at Al’s Burger shack when the co-owner was there. Al Bowers and his wife Melody opened their business on Franklin Street in 2013. Since then, they have expanded their operation to several locations including Southern Village.

What I really liked about Al Bowers was his positive attitude. He gave high praise to his employees. Each worker seemed so proud to work there and Al was equally proud to be their boss.

What is your favorite place for a great cheeseburger? What are the crucial ingredients? Where should I go next for my next taste test?
