Shrimp and Grits from NoFo

When it comes to Shrimp and Grits, who is the star of the show and who has the supporting role? The Shrimp? Or the Grits? Our Five Fave places for this southern classic have found the perfect balance between the two and know how to create truly award-winning dishes.

Nofo at the Pig (Raleigh): Everyone knows Nofo for its eclectic and homey Southern Charm so it is no surprise that they made our Shrimp and Grits list. Thick, cheesy grits and huge tender shrimp covered in a perfectly seasoned mushroom sauce.

Humble Pie (Raleigh)Their menu description pretty much sums it up with “broth of the gods, bacon” Whether you call it sauce, gravy, or broth, Humble Pie gets it right. Bacon adds great flavor and lets the shrimp steal the show.

Battistella's (Raleigh): Any place that draws inspiration from south Louisiana and boasts “upscale regional dishes” better perform with great shrimp and grits and Batistellas nails it! Nice sized shrimp and goat cheese sourced from a local North Carolina farm makes their grits creamy, rich, and unique in an upscale way.

Flying Biscuit (Raleigh): Peppery, smooth grits paired with blackened shrimp. Just spicy enough to make a glass of sweet tea a must have.

Peak City Grill (Apex): You can get out of downtown and still have a big-time shrimp and grits dining experience. Big pieces of shrimp and andouille sausage landed this off-the-strip restaurant in our Five Faves.

In an area as rich with restaurants as ours, there is steep competition for the title of best dishes. Did you catch the shrimp and grits throwdown this weekend? Did you agree with Top of the Hill's chef taking the prize? Who would you have liked to see the award go to?
