We’ve all seen it. Drivers tapping away at their cellphones at stoplights or sailing down the highway. Many have done it. The problem is it’s dangerous and it’s illegal.

WRAL Investigates decided to dig into the North Carolina law prohibiting texting and driving. We researched the statute, pored over statistics on citations, sat in on traffic court and interviewed prosecutors, defense attorneys, and drivers cited for texting and driving.
