As you get into the holiday spirit, don't leave your job search behind! People used to think that hiring came to a halt between mid-November and January, but that just isn't the case anymore.

A friend who spent her career in recruiting once told me, "I still have to get paid in November and December, so I'm not slowing down and neither should job candidates!"

In fact, keeping your foot on the gas during the holidays can distinguish you as many other job seekers will hold back during this time.

Here are a few tips for keeping your job search active - and even accelerating it - during the holiday season.

Use the holidays as an excuse

Now you actually have a reason to check in — to wish them a happy holidays. Reach out to former colleagues to say hello, update them on your current status and re-connect.

Bring your pitch to parties

Holiday parties are great opportunities to meet new people who you might not otherwise cross paths with. Be ready to tell people what you're looking for and to talk about what you bring to the table as a returning professional.

Be the organizer

Offer to plan a holiday party for an organization you're a part of. Being the party organizer brings perks like having everyone know who you are. It's a great conversation starter!

Get out to a meetup

Professional associations and networking groups throw holiday parties, and this is a great time for you to join the group. Everyone will be in a good mood at the event. Meeting new people will be easy.

Refresh your details

Spend some "down time" perfecting your cover letter so you're ready to hit the ground running in the new year.
