Ayden man charged with kidnapping, assaulting 16-year-old girl

Greenville police on Wednesday arrested and charged an Ayden man in connection with the Monday kidnapping of a 16-year-old girl. 

Sherman Lane Smith, 40, is charged with one count each of first-degree kidnapping, felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon. He was taken into custody at the Camelot Inn in Greenville.

According to investigators, Smith's assault of the teenager resulted in broken ribs, a collapsed lung, severe bruising, a black eye and a cut lip. Smith also cut the girl's throat, police said. 

No information about the girl's condition was immediately available. 

Smith was in the Pitt County jail Thursday under a $300,000 secured bond. Police said Smith has previously been arrested for attempted murder, breaking and entering and larceny of a motor vehicle.
