A man who refused to drop a knife was shot and killed by a Durham police officer Saturday morning in the 800 block of Park Avenue, a police spokeswoman said.

A man killed last summer during an encounter with Durham police was shot four times, according to an autopsy report released Tuesday.

Jose Adan Cruz Ocampo, 33, was shot and killed on July 27 when, according to police, he confronted officers with a knife in the 800 block of Park Aveneue and refused to drop it.

An attorney representing Ocampo's family has said witnesses said Ocampo was trying to hand over the knife when he was shot. At the time, police were investigating a nearby stabbing, and Ocampo was waiting outside his home to talk with officers about an altercation.

The autopsy report states that Ocampo was shot in the top of his head, his chest, his abdomen and his left wrist. The shot to his head was the fatal shot, according to the medical examiner.

Officer R.S. Mbuthia, who shot Ocampo, remains on administrative leave with pay pending the conclusion of a State Bureau of Investigation review of the shooting.
