Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said "several" people were killed following a Sunday evening crash involving a church van.

Authorities responded to the crash on Barham Siding Road and Zebulon Road, northeast of Rolesville, at about 5:30 p.m. and a helicopter, police cars, firetrucks and ambulances were visible at the scene.

Video from the scene showed at least one person being taken to the hospital in a helicopter. Authorities said at least 10 people were injured in the crash.

Chris Harrington was talking on the phone with his parents, who were traveling down Zebulon Road and witnessed the crash.

"She was like 'Oh my gosh, it that a person or a deer?" and she's like 'We've got to stop, we've got to help,'" Harrington said.

Irene Harrington never hung up the phone and was still on the line with her son as she continued to help at the scene of the crash.

"It was terrible. It was so terrible," she said.

Irene Harrington said a van and a bus carrying a church group flipped over and the van ended up in a swamp with someone trapped inside the submerged vehicle.

Irene Harrington said she and her husband tried to help calm down the accident victims until emergency responders arrived.

"When you see something like this, your first reaction is to help, to do something," she said.
