Cumberland County Sheriff's detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a Fayetteville man found in his home early Saturday morning.

Authorities found the body of Josephus Davis, 63, at his home at 576 Braxton Blvd. around 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Family members said he had been struck in the head, but the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office won't comment on the cause of death until investigators receive the results of an autopsy.

Davis' body was sent to the N.C. Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill.

Davis' niece, Michel Briggs, said her uncle was a family man who lived alone.

"(He) was a great blessing to the family. He loved us. He loved family time," she said.

She said she believes Davis was killed by someone he knew.

"He knew a lot of people and he was a good-hearted person," she said. "If he did open his home to someone, it had to be someone he knew."

No other information was released. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at 910-323-1500.
