Authorities: Fifth-graders brought gun, drugs to school

Two students have been suspended after authorities said they found a loaded handgun and a bag of marijuana at Dawson Elementary School last Thursday.

A parent called Dawson Elementary Principal Sharon Arrington Thursday morning and said her child had seen a student with a gun at school the previous day. Arrington called the student and his teacher into her office, and he admitted to having a loaded gun in his backpack, authorities said.

The school resource officer seized the gun, and no one was injured in the incident.

An investigation led school officials to a second student with a bag of marijuana. That student also was suspended, officials said.
