Henderson police are searching for an armed man who stole a woman's purse and car outside Vance Charter School Tuesday morning.

Police say the man had a handgun and approached the 65-year-old woman in the parking lot, at 1227 Dabney Drive, shortly before 10 a.m. He demanded her purse and keys and stole her white 2010 Toyota Camry with North Carolina license plate ZTA-4269.

The man drove in the direction of Hardee's on Dabney Drive, police said. He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a green T-shirt and black bandanna.

"He should be considered armed and dangerous," said police spokesman Lt. Christopher Ball.

Vance Charter School was temporarily locked down during the investigation.

Anyone with information about the man should call a local law enforcement agency.
