The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed a 2.5 magnitude earthquake near Elgin, S.C., occurred at 7:11 a.m. on Thursday morning.

This is the sixth minor earthquake in the area this week, WCNC Charlotte reports. The first earthquake -- a 3.3 magnitude tremor -- occurred Monday at around 2:18 p.m. near Lugoff. That set off a small swarm of quakes, including Thursday's.

All of the quakes were within 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) of Elgin.

Damage-causing earthquakes are very rare in the Carolinas, but in August 2020, Sparta, N.C., was shaken with the most powerful earthquake our state has seen in over 100 years. Here's a look at some of the most damaging earthquakes in N.C. history.
