Angier rejects proposal to bring asphalt plant to town

An asphalt plant will not be coming to Angier after an hours-long meeting where the town denied a special use permit.

The meeting about a proposed plant for Highland Paving lasted seven hours, not ending until after midnight. Highland Paving is a construction company with asphalt plants in Fayetteville and Leland.

Even after midnight, a social media feed for the meeting had more than 100 viewers. The meeting room was so packed, some people were forced to listen to the meeting on their phones in the parking lot.

The development was arranged to be built on Highway 210 and bring 30 jobs to the area. Dozens of homeowners argued the plant would negatively impact health and property values in the area. Those sharing that opinion signed a petition that garnered nearly 2,500 signatures.

Earlier this month, residents told WRAL that the asphalt fumes are known toxins, and this project was too close to their Angier homes.

The proposed development was valued at $4 million.
