Authorities said Smith was abducted on Friday night in Morrisville. Morrisville police were investigating an assault connected to the alert.
On Friday, officers responded to an apartment on Bloom Road and learned that Smith was taken by his mother at gunpoint.
Authorities said Friday that Williams and Purdie were suspects. An unidentified man is a suspect as well, authorities said.
Neighbors at the apartment complex told WRAL News they saw the suspects come down the stairs around 2:20 p.m. Friday.
According to them, a man was carrying a screaming 4-year-old child before getting into a car and driving away.
"I thought a dog had got ahold of a kid," Allison Swarts, the neighbor said. "There were adults yelling, there was alot of movement and the child was screaming the whole time."
Smith, Williams, Purdie and the other man were in a blue Nissan Maxima with NC tags LCN-3940, according to authorities.
"Terrifying that something so terrible had to happen just a couple of feet away from my front door," Swarts said.
Investigators said the victim was allegedly assaulted by both Purdie and the unknown male and Williams pointed a handgun at the father. Police said the father’s girlfriend took the child during that time, and Williams allegedly pointed a gun at the father’s girlfriend and took Smith from her. The father’s girlfriend’s wallet was also stolen, according to police.
