Law enforcement agents training to catch drug runners Sunday ended up helping Granville County authorities round up a dozen people believed to be running a real cock-fighting ring.

Granville County Sheriff Brindel Wilkins said that his deputies discovered dozens of roosters and cock-fighting equipment in a group of vehicles on N.C. Highway 96 near the Tar River bridge.

Deputies called in help from different law enforcement agencies that were nearby training along Interstate 85, the sheriff said.

Wilkins said they took 14 people into custody and charged 12 with cock-fighting after questioning. Ten were given $12 bonds, and two $10,000 bonds.

Altogether, deputies seized 63 roosters, one gun and $23,000 in cash, the sheriff said. Guilford County Animal Control will house the roosters temporarily.
