All Wake County Public School System schools will moving to Canvas next month for the district’s learning management system.

The new system is better for communication, and it allows parents to have visual access to their child’s account, school system officials said during a school board committee meeting Monday.

The district will encourage parents to create “Parent Observer Accounts,” which allow parents to see their children’s accounts, including their progress on assignments.

The school system has been holding virtual learning sessions for the community on how to use Canvas for learning, ahead of the transition for all schools beginning July 1.

The final session will be Tuesday evening at 6 p.m., with an elementary school focus.

Many schools have already been using it. Many have been using Google Classroom and will switch in July.

The district maintains guides on how to use Canvas, for both students and parents. The K-2 student video guide can be found here, the middle school video guide can be found here, and the parent video guide can be found here.

Canvas will facilitate messaging, contain school announcements and sync with state educational software.

Parent Observer Accounts allow parents to see documents, quiz titles, grades and assignment due dates, among other things. Parents can learn more here.

The accounts will be new for many parents, because other learning management systems used by the districts have not previously had that feature.
