DOT begins preparing roads for Wednesday snow

Crews with the North Carolina Department of Transportation started brining major Wake County roads on Monday in anticipation of snow later in the week.

According to the DOT, 12 brining trucks got started by 9 a.m. and will continue working until about 3 p.m. The initial attention will be on interstates, divided highways and other major roadways, in addition to bridges and overpasses. The NCDOT said crews will continue the process on Tuesday if it is deemed necessary.

WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner predicts that snow could arrive in the Triangle by Wednesday morning. Though some models predict two inches of snow, Gardner said that Raleigh will likely only see a trace.

Cary resident Nathan Sammons remembers what roads were like during the last snow event, nearly two weeks ago.

"As long as I was driving the speed limit, a little slower actually, and trying to stop way before you normally stop, it wasn't too bad. The car in front of me was sliding all over the place," he said.

Road crews with the Town of Cary are trying to make sure roads are not slippery when the winter weather begins this week. Public Works Director Scott Hicks said the town is preparing for a worst case scenario after learning a lesson during the last storm.

"Where they are saying a trace to two inches, we're preparing for a two inch storm right now," he said. "Last storm, 10 days ago, they were saying a trace, probably not even that, although it could be something more and we didn't really prepare for it the way we wish we did."

More information about winter weather procedures can be found on the NCDOT website.
