After 22 years in business, Armadillo Grill on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh has closed. This comes shortly after the restaurant's alcohol license was suspended on April 12.

Owners made the announcement on social media Wednesday that the restaurant would be closed, effective immediately.

WRAL News has reached out to the owners of Armadillo Grill to ask why the restaurant's alcohol license was suspended.

The owners previously claimed they were closing Armadillo Grill because of rising costs.

"As we have watched the restaurant industry change and the cost of doing business rise, we feel this location no longer serves our customer base," owners wrote Wednesday on Facebook.

Owners wrote that they would be seeking a "better location to serve our Raleigh community," but would continue to offer catering services in Raleigh.

However, on Friday, WRAL News learned Armadillo Grill had its alcohol license suspended on April, according to ABC documents.

In July 2023, employees at Armadillo Grill were arrested on drug charges after an investigation by the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division, North Carolina State University Police, Wake County ABC and Raleigh Police Department.

The Tex-Mex restaurant's flagship location in Carrboro will remain open.

Armadillo Grill is among a growing list of longtime downtown Raleigh area businesses that have announced closures in the past few months.

After 10 years in business, Clouds Brewing closed its downtown Raleigh taproom earlier this month.

Last week, Capital Club 16 announced it would be closing its brick-and-mortar space at 16 West Martin St. at the end of April. Owners plan to focus on onsite catering, pop-up events and their food truck, The Wandering Wolf.
