After 5 shootings in 2 days, group to rally against Durham gun violence
After five shootings in two days in Durham, people fed up with the wave of gun violence will gather Wednesday to send a unified message.
A person was shot Tuesday night on Nelson Street. On Monday, six people were injured in four separate drive-by shootings.
The group "A Chance 2 Change" says it’s time to do something now.
When they hear a report about potential violence in the city, they stand in the way and keep watch to help prevent it.
The group led a rally last week after 9-year-old Z’yon Person was shot and killed.
“We are here to help, we are here to thrive,” said Robert Belcher, who participates in the group. “We’re here to make Durham a better place. I’m not saying we can do it all by ourselves. We want any help we can get, anybody who wants to help positively.”
In June, city council voted against a request to add 18 officers to the Durham police force.
The department said there’s no effort currently to seek more officers.
A Chance 2 Change’s rally is set for 7 p.m. at Enterprise and South streets in Durham.
