Pvt. Bruce Anderson was an African-American serving in an all-white Union regiment that landed at Fort Fisher in January 1865. Anderson volunteered to run in front of his unit, under heavy fire, carrying only an ax. He hacked a hole in the fort's thick pine fence, allowing his comrades to enter, take the hill and eventually capture the fort. Anderson eventually received the Medal of Honor.
