Recognize anyone? Surveillance video could help solve murder case

Investigators are hoping newly-released surveillance video will help find the person or people involved in the murder of an Apex man who was stabbed in the heart while loading his boat with fishing supplies last August.

Randall Miller, 65, was outside a friend’s home on West Atlantic Boulevard around 4:40 a.m. on Aug. 29 when police say a person snuck up from behind him and stabbed him.

Police Chief Jeff Harvey said at least three people captured on video are also believed to be responsible for multiple car break-ins and left the area in a silver four-door Infiniti.

The surveillance video shows Miller walking out of a garage carrying supplies when the person sneaks up behind him. A few minutes before the stabbing, police said cameras captured one person trying to open a car door at a home nearby and another person walking down the street.

“He was caught off guard. The incident happened and it was over in a matter of seconds," Harvey said. "It was totally a senseless crime. He was just a true victim."

“We are hoping by releasing this [video] and letting the public see it that maybe they might pick up on some mannerisms — the way people walk, the body shape, whatever we can get — to get some more concrete substantial evidence.”

Sue Miller, the victim’s wife, told WRAL News in January that her husband was visiting Atlantic Beach from their home in Apex for a fishing trip.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is the lead agency on Miller’s case — the first homicide in Atlantic Beach in more than a decade and the third in the town’s history.

Harvey said investigators have obtained video from doorbell cameras, ATMs and gas stations. The video has helped develop leads over the last nine months but motive. No arrest have been made.

“It’s discouraging. It’s frustrating,” Harvey said. “[Miller] is a true victim.”

“There are three people who know what happened and obviously they are going to be tight-lipped; however, we think over time eventually this will come out. I still believe it’s a solvable case.”

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Atlantic Beach Police Department at (252) 726-2523 or the State Bureau of Investigation at (919) 662-4500.
