'A clear leader': Lufkin Road Middle School community mourns principal's unexpected death

The Wake County Public School System said Monday the principal of Lufkin Road Middle School died unexpectedly at the school.

A statement on the county's website shared condolences for Karen Sinders, the principal of Lufkin Road Middle School.

"She was a leader who had immense impact and reach in the school and greater community. She will be greatly missed by the students and the staff here at Lufkin Middle School," said southwestern area Superintendent Jonathan Enns. "Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this time of loss. At this time, the family requests space and privacy."

Sinders was the principal at the year-round school for over 11 years.

The PTA called Sinders a "ferocious advocate for Lufkin road ... a clear leader ... and a woman of grace."

Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert shared a social media post about Sinders' passing, giving her praises as an educator.

Gilbert told WRAL News Sinders was very active in the community and that her death will be felt far beyond the walls of Lufkin Road Middle School.

"Karen was always that person who linked people together," Gilbert said. "She was a good networker and she really loved our community and made sure her students and staff were a part of things."

It's not currently known how Sinders died.

Wake Schools said they are partnering with grief care nonprofit Transitions LifeCare, "in hopes of better supporting our grieving families, students and staff members."

The grief services will be offered at no cost.
