Ryan Motondo (Williams) wins 3A cross country state championship

The first N.C. High School Athletic Association boys cross country championship was held in 1956, and the there have been a number of changes since then.

  • There was only one team champion until 1986, when it went to three classes: 4A, 3A, and 1A/2A.
  • 1A and 2A were split apart in 1997, giving the NCHSAA four champions each year.
  • During the pandemic-influenced 2020 season, the 2020 championship was actually held in the 2021 calendar year, in January.
  • There have been five different host sites: UNC-Chapel Hill hosted the championships from 1956-1977, followed by Campbell University in 1978-79 McAlpine Park in Charlotte from 1980-2001, Tanglewood Park in Clemmons from 202-2009, and then Kernersville (previously named Beeson Park, now the Ivey Redmon Complex) has hosted in from 2010-present.

Chapel Hill has the most team titles (11) followed by Myers Park (nine) and Broughton and Sun Valley (eight each).

There has never been a four-time individual champion, but there have been four three-time champs: Hickory's Ryan Hill, Chapel Hill's Taylor Gilland, and two from Swain County — Tommy Trehern and Erik Perkins. Twenty-three runners have won the state title twice.

Swain County and Chapel Hill are tied with the most individual champs (six) with Myers Park, Watauga, and Mount Tabor with five each. Watauga has had five different runners win the title, and no other school has had more than four different runners take first.
