Spotlight: 9 Ways to Experience the Pamlico River in Washington this Summer

There’s nothing quite like the Pamlico River in Washington, North Carolina. It can provide recreation, excitement, peace, and tranquility. Here are some excellent ways to experience it this summer.

  1. Walk the parkway or boardwalk. One of the easiest (and most beautiful) ways to enjoy the Pamlico River is to take a stroll along the promenade on the Washington waterfront. While delighting in the river breezes, admire the boats coming and going in the harbor. Commune with nature by saying hello to the wildlife just off the boardwalk. When the NC Estuarium is open, you can buy a cup of turtle/duck food to throw to your new river buddies. This is also where you’ll see the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets anywhere.
  2. Savor a rooftop cocktail at The Mulberry House’s Sky Bar. The Mulberry House is a restaurant, coffeehouse, and brewery that infuses international cuisine with locally and regionally sourced ingredients that take your taste buds to the next level. The Sky Bar has unmatched views of the Pamlico.
  3. Take a river roving pontoon boat tour from the NC Estuarium. The tours run Wednesday-Friday at 10am and 12pm, as well as one tour at 10am on Saturdays from April through October. See all kinds of wildlife such as fish, turtles, and if you’re lucky, dolphins, osprey, even eagles! You’ll also learn all about our estuary system and a little local history about Washington. The boat ride is free, but donations are accepted. Space is limited and advance reservations are required. Riders must be 6 years or older.
  4. Get your good times rolling at Backwater Jack's Tiki Bar and Grill. An unpretentious but seriously tasty experience like no other. Sit outside upstairs and chow down on some grilled mahi tacos while watching boats come in and out at the public boat dock below. Or sit downstairs at what’s known as the ‘Fun Zone’ while sipping a rum runner and watching local musicians play on the outside stage.
  5. Explore the river on a kayak. Whether you are a seasoned paddler or an adventurous newbie, kayaking on the river is a great way to cool off, get some fresh air, and just have fun! Several places in Washington rent kayaks, including Inner Banks Outfitters, River Vibes, and Pamlico Boat Rentals at Moss Landing Marina. You can also rent stand up paddle boards, and River Vibes has paddle boats. Inner Banks schedules wine and cheese paddles during the summer season to the sandbar, Castle Island.
  6. Relax on the waterfront patio of the soon to reopen Parle’ Riverfront Restaurant & Bar. This establishment has been turning out some of the best oysters, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, and charcuterie boards for years. They have recently bought a riverfront property across the street from their former location and will offer the same superior fare, as well as some of the most innovative cocktails you can imagine. All while viewing the Pamlico in all its glory.
  7. Take a dip at Goose Creek State Park’s swim beach. A wonderful way to get some river time and chill out in the water is the swim beach at here. Pack a picnic, your beach towel, and wear your swimsuit. Many species of wildlife abound at the park. Playing in the Pamlico is a refreshing way to beat the heat this summer!
  8. Have a craft beer at Pitt Street Brewing on the Pamlico. A taproom that rivals any other in eastern NC, Pitt Street OTP is housed in a building on the river that was once an historic mill, then later a rowing club. You can consume your specialty brew in the boathouse overlooking the river, or on the riverfront patio. Either way, you’re getting a phenomenal experience with craft beers (or a glass of great wine) right on the river. Hungry? Pitt Street has a food truck on-site, Hooks, that can ‘hook’ you up with a shrimp burger or cheese steak that will make you wonder why you haven’t come here before now.
  9. Another fun activity that’s great for all ages is fishing at Havens Gardens. Anglers may catch catfish, bass, drum, flounder, trout, or white perch. Maybe you’d like to try your luck at crabbing for delicious, sweet blue crabs. A fishing license can be obtained at Eastside Bait & Tackle, Warren’s Sport Headquarters, or the NC Department of Environmental Quality office.

No matter how you choose to experience the gorgeous Pamlico River, you’re sure to find something that’s just right. This river is a jewel in Washington, and promises an awesome adventure for individuals, families, couples, water and recreational enthusiasts, and anyone who is interested in summer fun!
