An 81-year-old man was killed by a stray bullet Monday night when he sat down to eat dinner.

William Neville lived in the Carriage House Apartments on Carriage House Lane.

According to the Enfield Police Department, officers around 6:30 p.m. responded to an apartment building and found the back of the building was riddled with bullet holes.

According to investigators, Nevel had sat down on his sofa to eat when one of the bullets pierced the wall and struck him.

"The man was just sitting right there and eating a bowl of cereal, that was it," said Enfield Chief of Police Eric Johnson.

Neville's daughter posted to Facebook to ask witnesses to come forward.

"I ask, no I beg of you, if you know something, say something," Denise Williams Cherry wrote. "Put the guns down and stop the senseless killing and shooting."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Enfield Police Department at 252-886-0225.

"Right now, at this point, we got limited information. So, we are going to need the community to help with this," Johnson said. "I know everyone is scared, but together, if they work with us, we will make a difference in this community.

A second man, who police said was standing in front of the building, was also struck by a bullet. The man was transported to a hospital, treated and released.

In her post, Cherry said the shots damaged the homes of two other neighbors.

It was the second straight year to start with violence at Carriage House Apartments. In January 2023, Enfield Police Chief Eric Johnson said at the time that two people were engaged in a gunfight and both were injured. As a deputy was investigating that incident, gunfire erupted again. The deputy and two other men took shelter behind a car and were not hurt.
