Five young people on Sunday escaped a juvenile detention facility in Butner, according to the Granville County Sheriff's Office.

According to the sheriff's office, the offenders, who were all under 18, assaulted a counselor around 11 p.m. at the Dillon Youth Development Center, took her keys and escaped.

Deputies worked with Butner Public Safety to search the area, and the youth were back in custody at 6 a.m. on Monday.

The staff member was taken to a local medical center with minor injuries and released.

The Department of Public Safety is investigating the escape.
