BPme rewards offline at Durham gas station

With gas prices reaching record highs, people are looking to save every cent possible.

When a viewer told 5 On Your Side a gas station wasn't honoring its reward discount, the team went to work.

"This is the time that customers do need their earned discounts," Kate Ahlport told 5 On Your Side.

She uses the BPme app, which promises five cents off per gallon to customers who spend more than $100 a month with them.

When Ahlport recently tried to use that discount at the BP on North Roxboro Road in Durham, it wouldn’t work.

"We’d log in on the app, and it would say discounts being applied. But no discounts were reflected on the pump," Ahlport said.

"When I called BP customer service, they said, Oh, that’s probably a pump calibration problem. If that happens again, just try different pump,'" she said.

She did, but with no luck.

"I called BP customer service again, and seemed to be getting the runaround, and that’s when I called 5 On Your Side," Ahlport said.

5 On Your Side to the gas station and tried the app for themselves, but it wouldn’t work. The gas station attendant couldn’t explain what was going on either.

So, 5 On Your Side contacted BP. They then reset the equipment at the gas station and confirmed everything was back up and running.

However, BP did not answer 5 On Your Side's questions about why the rewards program was offline to begin with. When 5 On Your Side Reporter Keely Arthur went to the BP again, manager Shahadat Hossain blamed technology and internet issues and said the app is now working.

A spokesperson for BP said all BP and Amoco retail sites are required to participate in the BPme rewards program.

If you run into an issue, you can file a complaint with BP at 1-800-333-3991 or bpconsumer@bp.com.
